E-health zijn digitale toepassingen ter ondersteuning of verbetering van de gezondheid en de gezondheidszorg. Hiermee kunnen artsen en patiënten diagnoses stellen, uitslagen communiceren en informatie uitwisselen. Een digitale toepassing of eHealth kan een mobiele applicatie zijn waarmee iemand thuis gegevens over lichaamsfuncties (zoals glucoseniveau) kan verzamelen en doorsturen. Het kan ook een beveiligde e-health toepassing zijn waarmee huisartsen of medisch specialisten onderling of met een patiënt een consult houden. Verder moet e-health ertoe dienen dat een patiënt meer regie krijgt over zijn of haar gezondheid

De voornaamste doelen zijn besparing van tijd en kosten voor de betrokken partijen, verbetering van bestaande zorg of het bieden van nieuwe vormen van zorg. Verder moet e-health ertoe dienen dat een patiënt meer regie krijgt over zijn of haar gezondheid of behandeling, bijvoorbeeld door minder bezoeken aan een ziekenhuis voor consults of preventie van ziekenhuisopname door vroegtijdig signaleren van mogelijke klachten bij een chronisch patiënt.
